Dear Sue,

My 12 year old son is upset at a friend who keeps telling my son's secrets to other kids at school.  the friend also uses put-downs aimed at my son when they are in a group of boys.  What can I do to help?

Donna (Denver)

Hey, Donna

Go over the definition of a friend with your son; a person you can trust, a person who supports you, a person you can depend upon.  I think it is time for your son to find someone who fits the definition.  Your son can tell the friend why he is angry at him.  If the friend changes his behavior, then he is a friend.  If he does not change the behaviors, it is time for your son to move on.  He can always keep this person as an acquaintance.
