A Math Problem (Q&A) PDF Print E-mail

A girl who is 9 years old has been seeing me for language therapy for about 7 months.  We have been working on building her vocabulary skills and temporal concepts (before/after, since, a week ago).  When her father came to pick her up, he told me that she was having difficulty with math word problems at school.

I explained that word problems require understanding of math vocabulary including quantity concepts (gained, in all, have left).  The next session, I gave my student a math chart which lists math words/concepts under the computation needed (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).  For instance, “in all” is listed under addition.  Memory skills are also an issue with this student, so I gave her a copy to keep in her school notebook. I also gave her father a copy to give to her teacher.  The teacher was thrilled and made a big chart for the whole class to use!  Success!
