Social Skills: 2-3 years

  • Looks at a person who is talking to him/her
  • Uses "hi," "bye," and "please," with reminders
  • Engages in simple make believe play with dolls, animals, and people
  • Protests when frustrated
  • Directs another's attention to an object or action
  • Seeks attention
  • Brings toys to share with parent
  • Initiates social contact with others either verbally or non-verbally
  • Acts out a familiar activity in play (pretending to eat breakfast)
  • Competes with other children for toys
  • Seeks praise/response from others
  • Increasingly enthusiastic about the company of other children
  • Seems selfish at times
  • Explores surroundings
  • Laughs at silly labels of objects and events (calling a head a toe)
  • Acts shy around strangers
  • Uses “me, mine”
  • Uses non-verbal communication to show intent-  to request, to draw  attention to self, to show dislike, to indicate pleasure
  • Uses inflection in tone of voice (falling tone for dislike)
  • Begins to judge quality of language (polite vs. impolite)
  • Uses verbal turn-taking
  • Begins to engage in dialogue
